Reducing waste does not mean just to reduce the amount of waste that goes to the landfills but also to decrease the amount of dangerous chemicals that seep into the soil and pollute the atmosphere due to improper ways of waste disposal.
Recycling is a matter of choice. Today America has one of the highest rates of recycling as compared to any other country in the world. Yet if we look at our dumpsites we will be surprised to discover a huge amount of trash that ends up every passing day. As estimated by the Environmental Protection Agency we can recycle more than 85% of our total waste if more people become aware of the benefits of recycling.
Recycling is a process which includes separation and collection of waste materials, the processing and remanufacturing of these materials into new products and use of these recycled products. To complete this cycle we all must purchase and use products made from recycled materials and we must make it a part of our lifestyle as well.
Recycling is important to make the environment a cleaner place, the most important benefit of recycling is the impact it has on the Earth. Recycling also reduces the use of natural resources. For example, recycling goods made of paper reduces the number of trees cut down each year.
There are many reasons why it’s important to recycle:
1. Energy saving– producing recycled materials often require less energy compared to the amount of energy required to make completely new goods and can help conserve energy. For example, making paper from trees require more energy than producing paper from recycled materials.
2. Conserves natural resources– making new products out of recycled materials reduces the need of consumption of our precious resources. Thus recycling helps to protect the fresh resources for future generations.
3. Saves the environment – recycling reduces the need for processing raw materials which causes severe air and water pollution. It reduces the generation of harmful greenhouse gases like methane and carbon dioxide. Underground water contamination is also a major concern.
4. Reduces landfill – there are many landfill sites in the US and most of them are smelly and toxic. These sites produce methane, as the biodegradable waste from various commercial organizations and industries decomposes.
5. A good source of income– There are a lot of useless things lying in our house that might just end up in a dumpsite somewhere, we can recycle that, give it a new look and earn money from it.
“Reduce, reuse, recycle” is a slogan we often hear when we talk about recycling. Reducing the amount of products you purchase with excessive packaging restricts those wastes from entering the landfills.
Composting is another natural way of recycling, allowing households as well as industries to recycle a substantial amount of their waste. If these wastes are buried in landfill sites, they release methane whereas in a compost bin the presence of air changes the way of decomposition and restricts the emission of methane.
Recycling works best if everyone contributes his or her share in this process. Every small contribution to the recycling movement adds up to a better Earth for our future generations.
