Net Neutrality Pros and Cons – Speech (592 words)

Net neutrality which is commonly known as Open internet is to introduce the internet to everyone and treat them equally. This form of principle does not allow any internet service providers (ISPs) to discriminate against any other services or websites and have control over what the users should see or cannot see.

Net neutrality will affect both internet service providers and internet users in different ways, which usually arises in many debates everywhere. From a consumer’s point of view, net neutrality has maintained equal treatment among all providers and won’t let these service providers censor anything.

Whereas in a service provider’s point of view, it is a heavy control over them by the government on how to run their business. The basic censoring such as illegal contents are already done by law enforcement agencies, so net neutrality is applied for the rest of the websites and contents only.

In my opinion net neutrality is a good thing that allows equal opportunities for all the contents and websites to be accessed by all kinds of users. Here people with more money are never given special treatments. The ISPs cannot slow down the services to low-paying or small businesses and so even a small consumer who owns a youtube channel also could access the same way as others receive. In other words, even a tiny startup can survive in front of a large company with net neutrality.

Net neutrality also stops these ISPs from deciding what all content or websites are to be shared, so they won’t be able to block any specific websites or services just because the providers do not like them from the users. They should not be any kinds of discrimination in society over who should get access to use certain types of content. For example, high-quality online content is not something that is only a high paying or wealthy consumer’s product, it can be accessed by anyone who uses the internet.

Net neutrality allows maintaining a balanced and reasonable rate chart for all kinds of users. The ISPs won’t be allowed to increase rates or charge separately for certain features like faster streaming, faster online video gaming, etc. Today with this evolving world, internet access is widely spread all over the world even in tiny corners. Nobody wants a future, where one has to pay separately to access certain kinds of information or websites. As a normal citizen, why should we, or any users be ordered to choose what we should see or experience?

Just like every coin that has two faces, even net neutrality has its other side. Many speak of the lack of internet bandwidth and speed within a fixed rate, a large amount of internet which is used for certain pages or applications varying and forcing the user to recharge every time it gets over, and the unchanged internet trafficking, etc. In the end, net neutrality is good to maintain access without discrimination, interference, and restrictions.
