Should the Elderly Receive Free Bus Rides? – (Speech)

In an era marked by demographic shifts and evolving societal priorities, the question of whether the elderly should be entitled to free bus rides has garnered significant attention.

This issue intertwines considerations of social welfare, economic impact, and intergenerational equity.

As we navigate this discourse, it is crucial to explore the merits and demerits of such a policy, weighing its potential benefits against its potential drawbacks for both the elderly population and the broader community at large.

Speech: 1

Good morning everyone and welcome to this event. I consider it my honor and take immense pleasure in being able to come upon this stage and to have been given this chance to voice my opinions is such a wonderful opportunity for me. As we all know different countries have different policies when it comes to the well-being of their senior citizens.

Today, I have taken it upon myself to ask an important question; should all people over the age of 65 be able to ride the bus for free? This question is important because the welfare of the senior citizens and how a country treats its senior citizens explain a lot about the said country.

While it is understandable that providing free transport might put the government’s income through transportation and hence might result in putting the activities of the government on a tight leash, it is also important to make sure that these people are not limited from getting access to their necessities because of these reasons.

Commuting from place to place is a very basic and yet essential need of human beings, and not everyone has the luxury to afford their private vehicles also when looking at the bigger picture, it is important to promote the use of these public transport. The elderly are already on a limited income, and it would help alleviate some of the money they have to spend.

They can take their gas money and help buy medicine or groceries. In my opinion, elderly people should get free bus rides because they don’t work, it’s harder for them to do things. Remaining active after taking retirement can help to manage stress levels, improve moods, reduce feelings of depression, and prevent a series of chronic conditions and stroke.

Activity, so many studies suggest, is also important for maintaining cognitive functions, such as our ability to plan an activity, ignore irrelevant information sent to our brains, long and short-term memory, and shift rapidly between tasks. Elderly people who lead active lives need far fewer doctor’s home visits or medicines for a variety of illnesses.

They need fewer home carers. To be able to get on a bus means coming out of isolation, for many elderly people live alone. Isolation causes feelings of depression and brings on other mental disorders that will eventually cause rapid decline and hospitalization.

The elderly don’t receive as much pay as young adults or middle-aged adults. This is because they do not have a job and they are retired. Some elders might be disabled or something that affects them. They shouldn’t be using their money for something that should be free. In conclusion, the elderly might not be as able and fit enough as the younger population, and they must receive the necessary care to make things easier for them, and making bus rides free is one of the easiest things that can be done.

Speech on Should the Elderly Receive Free Bus Rides?

Today most older Americans are living in communities where travel by car is their only transportation option. For those who do not drive, there are few transportation alternatives, and very few among them are safe. Most seniors depend on family and friends for rides, but may often feel guilty asking for a sudden trip, such as to the library, a restaurant, or a movie.

Public transportation rarely exists in America’s suburban and rural areas, where older people live, and there is no hope that the situation will improve soon. In fact, in a recent study by Transportation for America, it was found that by 2015, more than 15.5 million Americans 65 and older will live in areas where public transportation is poor or nonexistent.

On a given day, more than half of the people who do not drive stay home. And even when they leave their homes, due to poor public transportation, their time out is restricted. Now, when compared to similar-age drivers, 15% of those who don’t drive make fewer doctor visits, 59% make fewer shopping or eating-out trips, and 65% make fewer trips to visit friends and family.

Older people who don’t travel outside their homes suffer from a high risk of social isolation. This can even have serious health consequences. It will have a direct impact on the mental health of the seniors.

A range of services, including fixed routes, specialized transport, flexible routes, and service routes, should be included in public transportation. Important approaches are also volunteer driver programs, taxi coupons, and other creative technologies tailored to public needs.

Mobility is a key factor for us as humans. We want to move around, reach different parts of the city and enjoy our independence. Similarly, as people age, they become limited in this regard because they stop driving and have to live from the retirement pension. Scientists have found that elderly people who have concessionary bus passes are much happier than the ones who need to depend on others to travel.

Free bus passes for the elderly improve their well-being and mental health.

Free bus travel or free public transportation for the elderly is implemented in various countries. It is a way for older people to maintain their independence and mobility like young people.

Researchers believe that concessionary bus passes allow older people to maintain their active lifestyle, see new places, and do new things. Free bus travel also helps in maintaining social relations, which is extremely beneficial in terms of mental as well as physical health.

The free bus passes surely cost taxpayers some money. But older people have already earned them. And we’re going to be old as well. Improving the mental and overall health of older people will help create a happier society.

Bus travel is a vital issue for older people for many reasons. Many rely on it for everyday trips to the shops and to visit friends and relatives. Most important is that for many, the bus is the only means of transport to get to a hospital appointment.

Free transport plays a vital role in preventing the problem of loneliness and isolation and in promoting mental and physical health and wellbeing.

Speech on Elderly Citizens on Fixed Income Should Receive Free Public Transportation

In my opinion, providing the senior citizens of the nation with the facility of free public transportation will always encourage them to make good use of it, and will not force them to use their cars, which means fewer car accidents and also less pollution on our roads. Elderly people always need public transport, essentially because we need very few of them driving on the roads to reduce the number of those devastating crashes and accidents that have occurred many times previously.

The elderly are both my body and mind very old and cannot be able to do some of the tiresome things that we do now. Most of them have retired and aren’t earning any more money now. They’re just living on their previous savings. Usually, elderly people always like to visit their grandchildren or children or at least visit somewhere, and they are the people who have the most time on their hands, due to their no work situation, so they would be ready to use the bus a lot. It is not good for the authority to take transportation fare from those jobless and aged people.

The old people in general aren’t as well aware of the various situations of their surroundings as their younger generation. When they are driving a car, they can cause many unwanted situations due to this reason. If we put them on public busses, it can make things very easier for them and for us as well. Also, it can prevent many harmful accidents. Diving can prove to be difficult for them for their old age so this can improve their lives in many ways.
They could be sick sometimes in their old age and can’t drive their own car properly to the hospital or other important places.

I also think that the elders have really been here for us for our entire lives and since at one point they lose their driving strength and ability, I think it would be a good idea to give them a safe way of transportation instead of forcing them to walk. It would be very nice for our society and country as well.

A lot of the elderly usually do not have a personal car because they have hearing or vision problems as well, or some have old-timers, and that can really affect the person like an old person. So that’s why I think the elderly should obviously get a free transportation pass or policy.

Elderly people are getting old as time passes and thus have weak bones. It’s very tough for them to travel on foot. We should be good and kind enough and give them free bus rides. No matter how much space they use or how they behave, they’re getting old and weak. They have body pain and also many troubles while carrying their bags and other heavy things, and I think we should help them out as per ability. So yes I think we should offer them free transportation so they can get where they need to reach.
